Nimes is located in via Domitia ...The Romans have left many buildings including the Pont du Gard and several arenas in major Mediterranean cities. Nîmes was a crossroads and a place of commerce and gateway to the Iberian peninsula. : Located on Via Domitia which once connected Rome to Spain was a colonial town close to Rome and the emperor Augustus.
Saint Gilles was in the twelfth century a rallying point and a place of passage for many pilgrims on their way to Saint Jacques de Compostela from Arles. But Saint Gilles was also a place of embarkation for the Crusaders who were waiting to leave for Jerusalem. |
