Cévennes, a land of suffering |
|
|
Cévennes were lands where human suffering experienced peaks.
The country Camisards and wars of religion was the scene of terrible episodes. The instigators of these conflicts was King Louis XIV, who revoked the Edict of Nantes.
Since the end of the XVI century the Edict of Nantes granting religious freedom to Protestants in France.
The country Camisards (white shirts) then underwent repression. Among the martyrs of the resistance, Marie Durand was confined to 38 years-until his death in the Tower of Constance in Aigues Mortes. Wars were added to the misery and starvation because the country was reluctant to produce wealth. But a singularity give some life to this country badly bruised. Sericulture (raising silkworms) issue of the mulberry-also called the tree of gold-will give this country an economic boom, which unfortunately will not last.
